Job Description

Ready for a change of pace from your typical practice? Or perhaps you're a new Family Physician/Rural Generalist seeking a supportive team? Have you always dreamt of practicing in the North? We are looking for permanent and locum family physicians to join our team in Hay River, NT.

Hay River is the perfect community for a comprehensive Family Practitioner that is looking for cultural variety, hard-working support staff, and new infrastructure all packaged up in a fabulously inviting town.

The 3,800 residents of Hay River enjoy the waterfalls, camping, fishing, hiking, biking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, year-round festivals, and snowshoeing while having the easiest access to Alberta centres than any other NWT community.

A typical day would include a mix of family clinic or a mix of emergency room and hospitalist services in participation with on-call rotation. Nursing home and/or extended care support and medevacs are also part of the typical practice. The Hay River Regional Hospital is a new state-of-the-art 20 bed hospital with ambulatory and acute care, and long-term care, mental health, allied health services, laboratory, and diagnostic imaging. There is excellent support by visiting specialists from Yellowknife.

This position provides a salary range of $374,447 - $434, 283 including benefits PLUS bonuses of $25,000 - $100,000 (Effective April 1, 2025) which includes a generous pension plan and:

  • No overhead or practice management
  • Liability, travel, and malpractice insurance costs covered
  • 100% of Northwest Territories CMPA Membership Fees covered
  • Paid vacation, starting at 26.5 days per year
  • Paid sick leave, starting at 18 days per year
  • Paid maternal / parental leave
  • Support for professional fees and educational materials ($4,500 per year)
  • Continued medical education support for travel and reimbursement of expenses

Locum Info: 

  • 6 day locums that can be extended!
    • Flat Daily Rate
    • No Practice Management or overhead
    • Travel Stipend
    • Accomodations and Travel arrangements provided
    • Additional $20,000 incentive for locums who shedule at least 75 shifts per fiscal year! 

Typically, these positions require CCFP certification, ACLS and ATLS or evidence of equivalent training and skills are required, and candidates must be eligible for licensure to practice in the Northwest Territories.
