Responsibilities
This position is a full-time (1.0 FTE) tenure track (contingent) position, comprised of approximately 50% clinical workplace-based teaching and 50% academic pursuits, including research (20%), teaching (10%), and administration (20%).
The successful candidate will lead and enthusiastically promote quality improvement (QI) activities within the Department of Family Medicine, ensuring alignment with provincial standards and national priorities in family medicine. As the Director of Quality Improvement, they will be a resource for training in residency, advancing QI through education, research, leadership, and clinical teaching. This includes delivering educational sessions, identifying or developing curriculum materials, and integrating QI principles into both undergraduate and postgraduate training. The candidate will engage faculty to embed QI content within clinical teaching and mentor faculty and residents in the design and implementation of QI projects, fostering interprofessional collaboration in clinical settings.
This position will contribute to QI scholarship, partnering with organizations like the Physician Learning Program and Primary Care Alberta to advance applied research in implementation science. As part of their leadership role, they will oversee the departmental QI strategy, may represent the department on institutional and provincial committees, and ensure that QI efforts align with broader health system priorities and accreditation requirements.
The successful candidate is expected to actively engage in academic activities, including research, medical education, and leadership opportunities to contribute to the academic mission of the Department of Family Medicine and the University of Alberta. Qualifications
Interested applicants must have:
• MD degree (or equivalent) with board certification in Family Medicine
• Certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
• Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)
• Experience in implementation science and quality improvement in clinical and/or academic settings
Considered an asset:
• Advanced training or certification in quality improvement (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, IHI, CQI).
• Experience in curriculum development, teaching, and mentorship in QI.
• Demonstrated scholarship in applied QI research and collaboration with health system partners
• Strong skills in data analysis, clinical informatics, or population health.
• Effective leadership, communication, and collaboration abilities.
• Graduate training in a relevant field
Remuneration for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be supported through the Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP). Start-up funding available.
