Medical Director – Long Term Care
Basic Function and Scope:
As a member of a multidisciplinary team, the Medical Director – Long Term Care, is responsible for directing and organizing the home’s medical services as required by all applicable legislation and home policies, including but not limited to the areas of medical service provision, administration of medical directives and programs and participation in staff education.

Qualifications:
Experience in Primary Care, Care of the Elderly, Palliative Care
Education:
- Legally qualified medical practitioner licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
- Commitment to continuing education and maintaining current knowledge and practice in long term care.
Required Skills:
Provide advice and be accountable for the areas of administrative medical services and policies in the home including:
- Development, implementation and evaluation of standards for medical services.
- Support the Director of Care in an annual review of medical care policies.
- Support the Director of Care in the preparation of an annual report summarizing the strengths and areas for improvement within the medical service program.
- Provide advice and support to the home with regard to issues such as infectious disease outbreak management.
- Provide such other services in relation to the provision of medical services in the home that are reasonably required, and which are jointly agreed upon by the Medical Director and the Administrator.
- Actively participate as a member of the home’s Professional Advisory Committees and make themselves available to attend and advise such other committees and teams as mutually agreed upon between the Medical Director and the Administrator.
- Visit the home regularly in order to carry out their responsibilities as Medical Director.
- Advise the home on emergency medical services for residents when required.
- Complete any reports/forms as required by legislation or home policy.
- In cooperation with the Medical Officer of Health, advise the Administrator of steps to be taken in the event of a communicable/infectious disease outbreak.
- Provide or arrange for primary care medical services in the event that a resident does not have an attending physician.
- Participate in the review and assessment of applications for admission as requested by the home.
- Support the nursing staff in planning and problem solving for any resident issues that may put other residents, staff or visitors at risk.
- Assist with the staff development program as required and jointly agreed with the Administrator and the Director of Care.
- Facilitate the appointment of specialty consultants to the home’s medical staff.
- Cooperate with and/or be available to address inquiries pertaining to medical care by the compliance advisor, advocates, residents, family members, accreditation surveyors and persons conducting coroner’s investigations.
- Review service expectations with Nurse Practioner as required, in accordance with the provisions of the Nurse Practioner Agreement.
- Review with the Administrator and Director of Care any Nurse Practioner noncompliance and jointly determine appropriate action to be taken.
