The Government of Yukon is seeking full-time and part-time physicians to join the Hospitalist service roster. A mixture of full- and part-time Hospitalists are desired to create a robust and sustainable service.
- The Hospitalist service provides 24/7 coverage of inpatient care at Whitehorse General Hospital, serving adult patients who require admission for acute medical needs. In-patient coverage provided by the service includes approximately 60 general hospital beds in the Medical/Surgical Unit, Intensive Care Unit, and Mental Wellness Unit. Four Hospitalist physicians are scheduled per day, with a target load of 14 patients and maximum load of 18 patients. Physicians working within the Hospitalist service work on a seven-day schedule, starting on Wednesdays. The scheduled physicians share call 1:4 for Hospitalist service patients.
- The hospitalist physician works within their privileged scope of practice for ‘GP with ICU’. For circumstances that are beyond scope, the hospitalist will transfer care or consult, as appropriate.
- Rostered physicians work together within their defined commitment to ensure the service deliverables are met including the services listed below. Rostered physicians are considered voting members of the service and are able to contribute to decisions related to quality improvement and the operation of the service.
The following are the direct patient care and clinical administrative services provided by the physicians in the Hospitalist service:
- Admissions (within guidelines from 8:00am-11:00pm) and discharges
- Daily visits (with exception of ALC patients)
- Documentation
- Procedures within scope of practice
- Family meetings and coordination of care
- Inter-facility transfer and handover
- Multi-disciplinary rounding and discharge planning
- Consult with physicians and other care providers
- Collaboration on facility access and flow
- Collaboration to appropriate schedule coverage and staffing procedures

Contract Details
Remuneration
- Hospitalists work a 9-hour day providing inpatient care, 0800-1700, 7 days a week, Wednesday to Tuesday
- The daily rate for hospitalists is $2,070 through an alternate payment arrangement (contract) which is equivalent to $230/hr.
- Weekend and statutory holiday premium – daily rate is $2,295 on weekends and statutory holidays (equating to a $25/hr increase)
- On-Call Hospitalist services provided outside of the 9-hour workday (1700-0800) is billed as follows
- Billing an hourly rate during the evening (1700 – 23000) for services provided in-hospital plus on-call through the fee-for -service model
- all other services will be remunerated through the fee-for-system model
- On-Call hospitalist is eligible to bill Level 1 On Call (currently $32.70 per unit) for these hours.
Incentives
- Recruitment bonus - $20,000 for full-time and $10,000 for part-time for a one year roster commitment. Payable 50% upon signing and 50% after completion of the roster commitment.
- Access to benefits through the Yukon Medical Association including relocation (max $15,000), CMPA reimbursement (100%), parental benefit, locum support and CME
- Additional training support may be available to support in-patient and ICU related training
Roster Commitment
- Full time = 24, 7-day weeks per year (6 weeks per quarter)
- Half time = 12, 7-day weeks per year (3 weeks per quarter)
Other Expenses
- No expenses are compensated or reimbursed through this contract
Shadow Billing
- All contracted physicians are required to shadow bill for services provided, either by paper claim or an electronic format that can be consumed by the claims processing system for Insured Health Services.
- Access to a billing support service may be available on a cost recovery basis

- One year contact starting January 1, 2025, or the first day of the first shift
Time Commitment
- Regular Hours – 9 hours per day; 0800-1700; 7 day shift
- On-Call hours - 15 hours per call day; 1700-0800; 1:4 call
