Job Description

The Eastern Zone of the Nova Scotia Health Authority has family practice opportunities in a number of communities within the Zone. These opportunities vary in scope of practice.
Calling Nova Scotia home means ocean views, active living and welcoming communities. Practicing here means working with passionate colleagues, providing world class care, and helping people be healthy and stay healthy, for generations. The Nova Scotia Health Authority provides health services to Nova Scotians and some specialized services to Atlantic Canadians. We operate hospitals, health centres and collaborative community-based programs across the province.
The Eastern Zone is supported by the two regional hospitals and a host of community hospitals and health centres. Specialty services are distributed among the two regional hospitals located in Sydney and Antigonish. Located on the very Eastern point of Nova Scotia is the stunning scenery of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park where the road climbs along the edge of Nova Scotia and it is a regular occurrence to hike among moose in their habitat. Enjoy the port city of Sydney and see the World’s Largest Fiddle on the friendly waterfront boardwalk. Cape Breton Island (connected by a causeway to mainland Nova Scotia) is known for a music scene that has prompted international attention for its deep Celtic and Gaelic roots. The traditions continue just on the other side of the Canso Causeway throughout Guysborough County to the town of Antigonish, home of St. Francis Xavier University – including the Coady Institute for International Development and the annual Highland Games and just a short drive to go back in time at Sherbrooke Village, a living museum where you can experience a traditional Nova Scotia town during the 1860’s and while in Sherbrooke you can enjoy the picturesque St. Mary’s River – a must see for nature lovers!
The community of Neil’s Harbour is looking for a full time family physician to become a member of a three person rural practice. Modern office space with shared staff and EMR is located in the Buchanan Memorial Community Health Centre. Responsibilities include running a family practice office, caring for inpatients, providing ER coverage and low volume after hours call. Remuneration is via Alternate Payment Plan. Family physicians may participate in the teaching of medical students and family practice residents through Dalhousie University. Very scenic surroundings offer many opportunities for excellent year round outdoor activity.
The community of Guysborough has an opportunity for a full time family physician. This role is based out of the Guysborough Memorial Hospital, a 10 bed facility located 65 kms from St. Martha’s Regional Hospital. The hospital has a partnership with the Guysborough Youth Health Center and is adjacent to the Milford Haven Home for Special Care. This opportunity provides a guaranteed income through an APP contract. In patient care and ER coverage are required.
Glace Bay has opportunities for full time family physicians to join their community of twelve family physicians and two nurse practitioners. Deliverables include running family practice office/clinics, providing call coverage, and caring for inpatients at the Glace Bay General Hospital. Remuneration is via Fee For Service. Opportunity is available to work in the emergency room, provide obstetrical care, or assist in the OR. Family physicians may also participate in teaching through the family medicine residency program based in Sydney, and/or with medical students through Dalhousie University.
Port Hawkesbury is a close knit community with local leadership active in developing a Community Health Centre – one great reason to consider coming here. There are four family physicians serving this community of ~13, 000 people and the local Strait Richmond Hospital, a 15 bed facility with an opportunity for an additional full time family physician to join the network. Responsibilities include inpatient coverage; emergency coverage would be an asset. Remuneration is via Fee For Service.
