The Department of Family Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, is seeking applications for the Dr. Ian McWhinney Chair in Family Medicine. Candidates must hold an MD or equivalent and practice as a family physician. Candidates must also hold certification or be eligible for certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario. 

The Dr. Ian McWhinney Chair in Family Medicine was established to honour Dr. McWhinney who was the first Professor of Family Medicine in Canada and the first Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. The Chair has a term of five years, renewable once.

We are looking to attract a family physician with at least 10 years of experience and with an established research program, excellent publication record and grant success. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence in Family Medicine, Primary Care and/or Health Services Research and a strong knowledge of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methodology. The successful candidate will be appointed to fit the Academic Role Category, (ARC), of clinician researcher or clinician scientist in the Department of Family Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, depending on academic record. This is a continuing appointment. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide some teaching within the Department’s Graduate Studies program, consistent with the Academic Role Category.

The Department of Family Medicine is an academic leader of family medicine in Canada. The Ian McWhinney Chair Holder will conduct research within the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine,(CSFM), a world-renowned centre for primary care research within the Department of Family Medicine. The CSFM specializes in interdisciplinary research in family medicine, primary care, health systems, and community health in order to transform the health and care of patients, providers and the population.
