Applications are invited for the position of Chief , Department of Family Medicine, at Unity Health Toronto, St. Joseph’s Health Centre (SJHC). St. Joseph’s is a fully accredited community teaching hospital within the Unity Health Toronto network. Unity Health Toronto is Canada’s largest Catholic Academic Health Sciences System and is affiliated with the University of Toronto.  

Employing approximately 2500 staff, along with 400 Credentialed Staff physicians serving approximately 400 beds, St. Joseph’s provides primary, secondary and selected tertiary services to the West Toronto region. Serving a culturally and economically diverse population of about 530,000, it has embraced the Unity Health values of Inclusivity, Community, Excellence, Compassion and Human Dignity. 

The St. Joseph’s Hospital Department of Family Medicine was established in 1989, to provide seamless comprehensive primary care services including preventative care and chronic disease management. In addition to clinic based family medicine, the team provides specialty programs devoted to low risk antenatal/postnatal services, addiction medicine, serious mental health, home visits for frail elderly, and inpatient palliative care consultations. 

In 2007 the department was expanded to become the SJHC Urban Family Health Team The team is based out of 2 sites at 30 The Queensway (located in the lower level of the Hospital & 27 Roncesvalles, located across the street from the Hospital. The services are provided within an interprofessional collaborative and academic framework.  We are one of the largest community teaching practice sites affiliated with the University of Toronto.  

As of December 2019 the SJUFHT had close to 6000 rostered patients and served another 1190 patients through the consultation service. Many of these patients rostered experience significant barriers to receiving care.  The team places priority on improving access and quality of care for patients in our catchment area for the following populations: 

       recent immigrants and newcomers

       individuals experiencing serious mental illness and concurrent disorders

       patients with no health insurance

       patients/families who are dealing with end of life

       individuals with substance use disorders, including pregnant patients

       elderly individuals, including frail housebound seniors

       homeless marginalized women 

       women who are victims of violence 

The St. Josephs Department of Family Medicine is a fully affiliated academic teaching site within the Department of Family and Community Medicine at The University of Toronto. There are 23 part time physicians appointed to the FHT and 150 community physicians who are engaged in teaching medical students and residents. At this time the department supports 11 PGY 1 residents and 12 PGY 2 residents. Additionally, annually the team supports 13- 14 medical students, 4 addiction medicine fellows, 1-2 palliative care residents, 2-3 psychiatry residents and elective medical students in addictions, palliative care and family medicine. Each year there are also a variety of Health Disciplines learners from nursing, NP program, pharmacy and social work.  

The Department seeks an outstanding clinical individual with proven strong administrative and leadership skills, in particular with experience and knowledge regarding recruitment and support of community emergency medicine physicians.  The Chief will be responsible for clinical and academic matters within the Department and will foster excellence in patient care services. They will ensure the growth of the clinical and educational programs and will foster collaborations with the site leadership within Unity Health Toronto, at St. Michael’s and Providence Health, along with the Keenan Research Centre, the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, and external partners. 

Job Requirements

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree and must possess CCFP certification, eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario, and eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2020, or as mutually agreed upon.


The anticipated time commitment will be two days per week for this administrative role. The salary for the administrative role is commensurate with this time commitment.
