About ONHC
The Ottawa Newcomer Health Centre (ONHC) is a proud program of the Somerset West Community Health
Centre that provides healthcare, offers timely, coordinated and culturally appropriate health and
social services to newcomers. Our approach to care is through a health equity lens with a focus on
addressing the social determinants of health to improve the lives and wellbeing of our clients.
Position Description
Ottawa Newcomer Health Centre has been providing care in the community since 2010. Our mandate is
to offer comprehensive, innovative regional programs that address people’s overall well-being. The
provision of care has expanded and ONHC has been selected by Ontario Health as one of only four
organizations across the province to initiate the establishment of a Specialized Clinical
Transition Team for Refugees with Complex Needs. The core objective of this initiative is to
enhance health outcomes by implementing culturally responsive, patient-centered interventions right
within the heart of refugee communities. The aim is to ensure improved access to a range of
healthcare services, focusing on key areas to improve access to healthcare services, including
primary care, mental health and trauma counselling, pediatric care, immunization and infectious
disease care, and women’s health care. A culturally responsive approach will
be utilized including access to interpretation services, and system navigation support.As part of this specialized team, the physician will have the opportunity to work within an
interprofessional
team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychotherapists, community health workers,
interpreters, and health promotion staff. The specialized team will medically stabilize clients and
facilitate transfer of the client to the community and act as a clinical resource to primary care
providers & organizations following transition.
This opportunity provides NO OVERHEAD COST to the physician and includes administrative staff
support and access to electronic documentation through TELUS PS Suites. SWCHC offers the pension
plan by HOOPP. We are looking for someone who has experience in and knowledge of immigrant and
refugee health including a sound knowledge and understanding of the issues facing immigrants and
refugees and the unique dynamics that exist within their various cultures.
